Canada has some good news for tourists and local travelers: this summer, admission to national parks, national historic sites, and marine conservation areas managed by Parks Canada will be free.
This applies to the period from June 19 to September 7, 2026, inclusive. The offer is part of the Canada Strong Pass program, which the Canadian government is bringing back for the 2026 summer season.
Free admission applies to all visitors—both Canadian residents and tourists from other countries. No separate physical pass, ticket, or registration is required; simply visit a Parks Canada location during the program period.
In addition to free admission, Parks Canada is also offering a 25% discount on camping and overnight stays at its locations. The discount will be valid during the same period—from June 19 to September 7, 2026. It applies to tent and RV campgrounds, backcountry overnight stays, oTENTik, yurts, cabins, and other lodging options managed by Parks Canada.
What Will Remain Pay-to-Use
At the same time, it is important to note that only park entry will be free. Some additional services will remain pay-to-use. In particular, reservations, parking, firewood, fishing licenses, special permits, tours, or services provided by third-party companies may be charged separately. Free admission also does not apply to provincial, territorial, municipal, or private parks not managed by Parks Canada.
The program also provides free lock passage on canals administered by Parks Canada on historic waterways. However, fees for mooring, boat launching, and other related services may still apply.
What Will Happen to the Discovery Pass
For those who already have a Discovery Pass or an annual pass to a specific Parks Canada location, the pass will be automatically renewed if it covers the Canada Strong Pass period. This means that holders of such passes do not need to apply separately for renewal.
Other Benefits of the Canada Strong Pass
The Canada Strong Pass also includes other travel benefits: discounts or free admission to select museums and galleries, as well as special travel terms with VIA Rail. In particular, children under 17 can travel for free when accompanied by an adult, and young people aged 18 to 24 can receive travel discounts.
For tourists, this is a great opportunity to plan a more affordable summer trip across Canada, especially if the itinerary includes national parks, historic sites, or camping. However, Parks Canada advises checking the specific location’s page in advance before traveling, as some places can be very popular in the summer, and availability for camping and overnight stays may be limited.
