Every year on September 7, Alberta celebrates Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day. This is an official commemorative date that provides an opportunity to thank Ukrainians for their contributions to the province’s development and to highlight the rich history of the Ukrainian community in Canada.
The holiday was established by the Alberta government in 2016 and was first observed in 2017. The date was not chosen at random—it was on September 7, 1891 that Ivan Pylypiv and Vasyl Yelinyak, considered the first Ukrainian settlers, arrived in Canada. It was from this moment that the history of mass Ukrainian immigration to Canada began.
Today, the Ukrainian community is one of the largest ethnic communities in Alberta. For over a century, Ukrainians have made significant contributions to the development of agriculture, education, culture, science, business, politics, and civic life in the province. Ukrainian heritage has become an integral part of Alberta’s history.
For many Ukrainians, this date still holds special significance today. After the outbreak of full-scale war, thousands of Ukrainians found refuge in Canada, and Alberta became one of the regions that warmly welcomed the new arrivals. Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day serves as a reminder that the Ukrainian community here has existed for over 130 years and continues to thrive, preserving its traditions while contributing to Canadian society.
At the same time, it is important to understand that Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day is not a statutory holiday. Schools, government offices, stores, and businesses operate as usual. It is, first and foremost, a day to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Ukrainians to Alberta’s development.
In many cities across the province, particularly in Calgary and Edmonton, themed events, exhibitions, cultural programs, lectures, and other initiatives dedicated to Ukrainian heritage are held on this date. For the Ukrainian community, this is yet another opportunity to share their culture, traditions, and history, as well as to thank everyone who supports Ukraine and Ukrainians.
Today, Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day is not just a commemoration of the first settlers. It is also a symbol of gratitude to the generations of Ukrainians who helped build Alberta, preserved their culture far from their homeland, and made Ukrainian heritage an integral part of Canadian history.
