On September 12, Globe Cinema in Calgary will host a screening of “Kuzma: Scarily Funny”—a biographical documentary drama about Andriy Kuzmenko, the leader of the legendary Ukrainian band “Skryabin.”
This is a film about a man loved by millions, but truly known only to those closest to him. Kuzma was not just a musician—he was the voice of a generation, a man with a sharp sense of humor, candor, self-deprecating wit, and a unique ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms.
The film reveals Andriy Kuzmenko through archival videos, audio recordings, rare photographs, and the memories of those closest to him. It shows not only the public Kuzma—the artist, frontman, and songwriter—but also the man behind the scenes: lively, profound, vulnerable, funny, honest, and very genuine.
Director Artem Grigoryan’s film is based on a vast archive of materials, much of which has never before been made public. That is why “Kuzma: Terribly Funny” offers a chance to see this familiar artist from a different angle and to once again appreciate why his words, songs, and image remain so dear to Ukrainians to this day.
The film will be of interest not only to those who grew up listening to Skryabin’s songs, but also to anyone who wants to better understand Ukrainian musical culture, Kuzma’s character, and his influence on several generations of listeners.
The screening will be in Ukrainian with English subtitles, so you’re welcome to bring friends or family members who don’t speak Ukrainian.
