Ford has announced a large-scale recall due to a software vulnerability in the Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM). According to the NHTSA, the module sometimes loses connection with the vehicle during initial startup after sleep mode — the module is turned on but cannot exchange data with the vehicle.

If a trailer is connected at this time, this can lead to:

  • failure of the trailer's brake lights and turn signals (for high and low series ITRM);
  • failure of the trailer's brakes (for high series ITRM).

The NHTSA emphasizes that faulty trailer lights and brakes reduce maneuverability and visibility, increasing the risk of accidents.

How many cars are affected by the recall

Canada

According to Canadian media reports, approximately 590,191 vehicles are subject to recall in Canada.

United States

In the United States, approximately 4.3–4.38 million vehicles are affected (the estimate in official NHTSA documents is 4,380,609).

Which models may be affected

The following models are mentioned:

  • Ford F-150 (2021–2026)
  • Ford Super Duty (2022–2026)
  • Ford Ranger (2024–2026)
  • Ford Maverick (2022–2026)

In the original NHTSA source, the list is broader and also includes:

  • Ford Expedition (2022–2026)
  • Lincoln Navigator (2022–2026)
  • Ford E-Transit (2026)

How to tell if the fault has occurred

The NHTSA describes typical warnings:

  • “Trailer brake module fault” message on the instrument panel;
  • “Fast” flashing of the turn signal indicator (fast flash);
  • Sometimes an additional message “Blind Spot Assist System fault”.

How Ford will fix the problem

The solution is an ITRM software update.

Ford plans to:

  • notify dealers and make VINs searchable from March 17, 2026;

  • perform the update via OTA (over-the-air), as well as leave the option to update at the dealer (free of charge).
