On July 1, Calgary will celebrate Canada Day with a large-scale program right in the heart of the city. The festivities will take place at several popular locations, where concerts, cultural performances, family activities, fairs, sports entertainment, and other free events will be held throughout the day.
The organizers have put together a program that showcases Canada’s cultural diversity and brings together residents and visitors alike. Each location will have its own unique atmosphere and distinct activities, so visitors can plan their own itinerary and spend the entire day in downtown Calgary.
Main Celebration Locations
Events will take place at the following locations:
- Prince’s Island Park;
- Eau Claire Plaza;
- The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland;
- Municipal Building and Sien Lok Park;
- East Village.
A free festival shuttle will run between Eau Claire and East Village. The buses will operate from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and depart approximately every 15 minutes.
Organizers also recommend using public transportation, bicycles, electric scooters, or carpooling, as large crowds are expected in the city center.
The Confluence
From 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., The Confluence will host a program celebrating the culture of Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
Guests will be able to see the Indigenous Spotlight and a traditional Powwow, visit a local artisans’ fair, and explore artisanal crafts.
There will also be a Sport Calgary zone where visitors can try out various sports activities. These include inflatable soccer, a bobsled simulation, and ski jumping.
This location is ideal for families with children, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to learn more about Indigenous traditions.
Municipal Building and Sien Lok Park
From 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a vibrant cultural program will take place near the Municipal Building and at Sien Lok Park.
Guests can look forward to:
- a dragon parade;
- a lion dance;
- a cultural fashion show;
- performances and presentations by various communities.
This part of the celebration will be dedicated to Calgary’s cultural diversity and the traditions of the communities that shape the city today.
East Village
In the East Village, the program will also run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
There will be family zones offering face painting and temporary airbrush tattoos. Visitors can stop by the information booths run by Tourism Calgary and the East Village team, as well as purchase food from local vendors.
This will be a great spot for a family outing, a stroll along the river, and exploring one of Calgary’s most popular neighborhoods.
Eau Claire Plaza
The festival program at Eau Claire Plaza will run from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Throughout the day, there will be live music, dance performances, and a face-painting area.
One of the venue’s main attractions will be an urban beach with water features. It will be a great place to relax on a hot day, especially for families with children.
Eau Claire Plaza will also serve as a key transportation hub, with a free shuttle departing for East Village.
Prince’s Island Park
The main concert program will take place at Prince’s Island Park and run from 2:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
Well-known Canadian artists will perform on the main stage:
- Walk Off the Earth;
- Tia Wood;
- Kardinal Offishall;
- Jamie Fine;
- Micah Sage.
In addition to the concerts, the park will feature a family-friendly beer garden, and visitors can have a picnic on the grass and enjoy the music under the open sky.
For those seeking a quieter space, a special low-sensory zone will be set up. There, visitors can take a break from the loud music and large crowds.
Fireworks
The celebration will conclude with a traditional fireworks display.
The show will begin at 11:00 PM, and the fireworks will be launched from Stampede Park.
Organizers recommend watching the show near the Max Bell Centre, which offers one of the best views.
Before heading out, be sure to plan your route in advance, as road closures, traffic changes, and large crowds are possible in the evening.
What to Know Before You Go
Most events will take place outdoors, so be sure to check the weather forecast and bring:
- water;
- sunscreen;
- a hat;
- comfortable shoes;
- a picnic blanket;
- light clothing for the day and something warmer for the evening.
Heavy traffic and limited parking are expected in the city center. The most convenient option may be public transportation or the free shuttle between the main venues.
