Do I need to bring documents to the interview?

You usually don't need to bring any documents to a job interview in Canada. The job interview focuses more on your skills, experience, and personal qualities than on document verification. Your documents will be asked for in the subsequent stages of employment if you are selected for the position. In addition, in very rare cases, you may be told the result of the interview immediately. Usually, you will need to wait at least a few days or weeks.

However, if you are going to an interview, there are a few things you should bring with you:

  • A printed copy of your resume. Although the employer already has your resume, an extra copy never hurts. Your resume is your main marketing tool. Even if you have already sent it via email, have several copies on hand to provide to all interviewers as needed.
  • If you applied with a cover letter, it's a good idea to print out copies of it. This will help to remind you of your main accomplishments and the reasons why you are a good fit for the position.
  • Documents confirming your right to work in Canada (if you are not a citizen or permanent resident).
  • Letters of recommendation from previous employers, if you have them.
  • Portfolio or work samples. If your profession requires a portfolio (for example, for designers, writers, or programmers), be sure to bring it. It demonstrates your skills and experience.

Prepare all the documents in advance and put them in a folder or portfolio so that they don't get wrinkled. Before the interview, make sure all documents are up to date and reflect your latest achievements and skills.
