A cover letter is as important a part of your Canadian job application as your resume. It gives you the opportunity to tell the employer about yourself in a more informal manner, emphasize your skills and experience, and explain why you are interested in a particular position and company. Some employers do not consider candidates without a cover letter. A few simple tips will help you write an effective cover letter for a Canadian employer.
A cover letter usually consists of several main parts:
At the beginning of the letter, include your contact information (name, address, phone number, email) in the upper left corner. Next, add the date and contact details of your employer (name, title, company, address).
Make sure to address the person in question, if possible. Use the wording “Dear Michael” or “To David”. If you don't know who to address the letter to, you can simply write “Dear Hiring Manager”.
In the first paragraph, briefly introduce yourself and state what position you are applying for. Here you can also indicate how you found out about the vacancy (for example, through the company's website, LinkedIn, or a recommendation). It is important to immediately grab the attention of the person who will read your letter.
This part is the most important. Divide it into two or three paragraphs:
In the final paragraph, summarize the results. Thank the employer for considering your application and express your desire to discuss your candidacy at an interview. For example: “I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your team.”
End your letter with “Sincerely” or “Best regards”, then leave a space for your signature (if you are sending a hard copy) and write your name.
